Vince Gill is a beloved country singer with an impressive resume. He has won the most Grammy Awards for a male country music singer and has released more than 20 albums.
Gill joined the country rock band Pure Prairie League in 1979 and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007.
Over the years, he has become a highly sought-after performer. One of his most memorable moments was when he was invited to perform on the legendary Grand Ole Opry stage alongside the talented band Little Big Town.
He received an invitation to play at Nashville, Tennessee’s Grand Ole Opry, a weekly stage show featuring country music that has been delighting crowds since 1925.
His managers reiterated the order the day of the show: he could act, but he could not sing any hymns honoring Jesus.
Gill was in a pickle. He could have complied with the request without disclosing his religious beliefs. Rather, he made a different decision.
Disobeying orders, he performed the stirring song “Why Me Lord,” which was composed and recorded in 1972 by American country music and gospel singer Kris Kristofferson.
Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash are two legends who have performed this song famously.
The response from the crowd was swift and forceful. Despite the song’s religious content, the crowd was clearly moved by Gill’s performance as seen by the standing ovation she received.
Gill’s brave choice to adhere to his musical style and beliefs is quite inspiring. Not everyone would have possessed the courage to publicly defend their beliefs.
It just goes to show that sometimes you get to set your own rules when you’re inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame!
