These teenagers realized their mistake and tried their hardest because you only have one chance to make a good impression.
A waiter in Los Angeles was serving four teenagers and made sure they had a great time. Then he received an inadequate tip. The waiter was disappointed and annoyed that kids and others don’t understand the custom of giving a sizable tip for hard work.
He expressed his concerns as a server on social media after the teenagers only left him a $3.28 tip:
Nothing irritates me more than when a customer smiles and gives me a heartfelt thank you as they leave and I get little to no tip. But then something very unexpected happened!
He received the following letter around a week later:
On October 7, around a week and a half ago, my three friends and I went to this restaurant to celebrate our own homecoming. It was exciting for us to be here alone, which was a new experience.
You were the best waiter we could have asked for. In addition to not treating us like infants, you were polite, understanding, and even able to change the menu to suit all of my dietary restrictions! I wanted to thank you for making our “grown-up” experience so amazing and fun.
Further, I would want to apologize on behalf of my group. Since we didn’t know everything, our 13-year-old brains weren’t quite sure how to handle the charge. You were quite helpful when it came to splitting the checkup and taking our less-than-ideal payment.
The pricing was reasonable, but we honestly didn’t know how much to tip and had completely forgotten what a tip was. As a result, we spent $3.28, our entire budget.

We didn’t realize how little we had left you for all of your hard work, so we left without knowing what we had.
When we realized our mistake, we felt awful. We knew we were going to have to fix it.
As a result, this envelope has the proper 18% tip, plus more for simply being exceptional. We appreciate your help and tolerance, and thank you for making our evening pleasurable. Thank you.

At $3.28, the gratuity was less than four percent of the roughly $100 bill! Thankfully, the teenagers realized their mistake and handled it appropriately.
The waiter posted a picture of the letter online along with some kind and supportive words:
“I’ve been in the military for a long time, and nobody has ever gone through anything like this. I don’t know how you learned about tipping, but thank you so much for your work and consideration. I hope your homecoming was fantastic!
Although people don’t always go out of their way to fix their errors, it can have a significant impact. This hard-working waiter is deserving!
