The Marker Ball’s History
The history of these brilliant markings is just as fascinating as its practicality. More than 50 years ago, in the early 1970s, it all started. Winthrop Rockefeller, the then-governor of Arkansas, was on an aircraft with Edward Holland, the head of the Arkansas Department of Aeronautics. While they were in the air, Rockefeller noticed that some electrical cables were dangerously close to their jet as it plummeted.
Concerned about the safety of the pilot and passengers, Rockefeller forced Holland to come up with a way to make electrical lines easier for pilots to see. Holland then reached out to engineer Jack Rutledge to resolve this matter. The wonderful idea that Rutledge had was to make colorful, eye-catching balls that would stick to the electricity wires and not be blown away by the wind.
