Native to North America, which includes parts of the United States and Canada, the Canada Lynx, or Lynx canadensis, is a species of lynx.
Although the species is known for having a light brownish-gray coat, reports of Canada Lynxes with black fur have also been made.
Shooting black text had never been conceivable until 2022, when a lucky person came up with a few images that quickly became well-known.
The animal was caught by a researcher from the University of Alberta in Canada. Thomas Jung, a Yukon government employee, used his cell phone to record the animal.
The discovery was described in detail in an article titled “Paint it black: first record of melanism in Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis)” that appeared in the journal Mammalia.
The footage was shot in a peaceful rural area close to Whitehorse, a city in the Yukon. The video shows the lynx relaxing at a distance of roughly fifty meters. There was a dog and several others around, and the lynx eventually fled when the dog began to bark.
The Canada Lynx has the traits of a reclusive, lonesome creature.Despite the lack of many distinguishing features in the blurry video, species experts were able to identify the animal as a Canada lynx.
Jung described it as having a black coat with whitish gray guard hairs all over it, along with whitish gray hairs in the dorsal and rostrum areas and facial ruff.
The majority of lynx species share a similar look, and Canada lynx are frequently spotted in the winter due to their silvery gray coats. Their coats frequently turn reddish brown in the summer.
The lynx in the movie is a very rare animal due to its variety of coat colors.According to Jung, these kinds of variations are frequently adaptations that can either help evolution (adaptive) or hinder it (maladaptive).
The advantages and disadvantages of melanin in any animal have not yet been determined by scientists. But according to Jung, the lynx’s characteristic is maladaptive since it hinders its ability to provide essential camouflage. The animal’s darker fur would probably make it stand out in the snow when hunting in the winter.
