I don’t think I will ever see whales the same way again.
In what may be one of the most disturbing discoveries to date, people are confused after hearing a beluga whale attempt to mimic human speech.
Beluga human conversation
Many animals can mimic human sounds in ways that will astound you, despite the common misconception that humans and animals cannot communicate. The parrot, which frequently picks up phrases and full sentences with astonishing accuracy, is a good example.
Imagine, then, how startling it would be to hear a beluga whale underwater make noises that nearly resemble human speech. Although dolphins have been trained to imitate human sounds, no animal had ever done so independently until NOC, a nine-year-old whale, made her appearance. He produced strange sounds at abnormally low octaves in brief, clipped bursts.
It all began when a diver at the National Marine Mammal Foundation in California surfaced, confused, asking, “Who told me to get out?”
The researchers looked at each other in awe, realizing that something extraordinary had just happened.
Whales, known as the “canaries of the sea” because to their high-pitched chirps, have long been accused of mimicking human speech. However, nobody has yet to record it.
The researchers confirmed the startling discovery by filming the event as soon as NOC was identified as the source of the disturbing sounds.
Today, a 2012 NOC video has surfaced online once more. Instead of making people laugh, the whale’s bizarre attempts at speech have angered them, and many are now questioning what else these sea monsters are capable of.
The beluga is portrayed in the video by the ABC news hosts as cute and friendly, but online viewers had a different reaction.
As one YouTuber put it, “it basically says, ‘I will consume your soul,’ by pulling up the bloody terrifying beluga whale picture.”
Another highlighted the discrepancy between the unsettling scene and the reporter’s positive comment, “He looks kinda friendly.” “The thumbnail literally made my SOUL jump out of its body for a second,” one reader wrote. Several people chuckled at the awkward time and said, “I laughed so hard when she said ‘he looks kinda friendly’ right as that terrifying picture came up.”
One observer even tried to explain the behavior by saying, “If you consider that the beluga is only imitating what he can hear, it makes sense.”
Orcas imitate human speech.
It’s likely that the whale can only hear human speech when the speaker is nearby, submerged, and wearing dive gear, which distorts the voice. The explanation continued, “If you’ve ever gone swimming and tried to talk, it sounds exactly like that.”
But belugas aren’t the only ones. Earlier this year, a 2018 orca recording was released that had the same disturbing imitation of human speech. In a study published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society: Biological Sciences, researchers from Chile, Germany, Spain, and the UK confirmed that orcas could mimic human sounds.
According to Josep Call, a professor at the University of St Andrews and one of the study’s co-authors, “it tells us that they are flexible vocal learners and their flexibility is not only in their vocal domain but also in their motor domain.”
“We previously understood that they could imitate body movements, but we now know that they can also imitate sounds and sounds that are not in their repertoire,” he added.
