10-year-old crushed to death after foster mom sat on him

There are stories that leave an impression long after the words have faded. This is one of those stories that both infuriates and destroys.

Dakota Levi Stevens was only ten years old. A bright, energetic youngster with his whole life ahead of him. But only a month after he entered a new foster family in Berrien County, Michigan, his young life was cruelly ended in a way that is almost unfathomable.

On April 25, 2024, Dakota died from artificial asphyxia. Simply put, he was crushed to death.

His foster mother, 48-year-old Jennifer Lee Wilson, is the one charged with his murder. Authorities said that after Dakota ran away and was found at a neighbor’s house, he acted out by throwing himself to the ground and showing signs of desperation. Wilson’s answer? On top of him, she sat down.

Not for a second. Not always. She reportedly pushed her whole body weight—about 340 pounds—onto a child who weighed barely 90 pounds. Five full minutes.

At the moment, Wilson was on the phone with his caseworker. Dakota screamed below her head. In the end, she told authorities that she thought he was “faking it.” When she finally turned him over, she saw something strange: his eyelids were pale.

Another child in the house made the 911 call. By the time help arrived, Dakota had ceased reacting. He was taken to a hospital and placed on life support, but it was too late. Two days later, his little life came to an end.

His injuries, which included soft tissue damage, internal bleeding in the liver and lungs, and organ trauma, were confirmed by the postmortem. It was violent and lethal.

As if the unfortunate circumstances weren’t already enough, further information just made them worse. About 30 minutes before the event, Dakota had gone to a neighbor’s house and requested her to adopt him. He told her that his foster parents had beaten him, according to court documents. No one responded that moment, that plea, because no one realized it would be his last.

Wilson claimed that although she initially informed police that she may have “tackled” him to stop him from fleeing again, she was only trying to keep him down. She subsequently pleaded guilty to reckless homicide.

In January 2025, she was sentenced to six years in jail with a one-year probationary period.

According to The Indianapolis Star, Wilson had only had Dakota for a month after the Department of Child Services placed her in his care. Other foster children in the home were removed following the event.

According to his obituary, Dakota was a vibrant young man who “loved the outdoors” and “marched to the beat of his own drum.” This is how those who knew him choose to honor him. Not for the agony of his last moments, but for the light and life he carried.

His death has sparked outrage and deep sorrow. Although Wilson will get his time, there is a strong belief that no amount of punishment could ever make up for the lives lost or the disintegration of a system that was put in place to protect its most vulnerable citizens.

We have no control over Dakota’s destiny. But we can mention his name. We remember him. We can demand better for every child still navigating the broken foster care system. Because other children, like Dakota, deserve better. They have a right to security. You have to feel sorry for them. They deserve to live.
