An elderly woman begged for gifts from a wealthy man in a suit, but when he saw her jewelry, he nearly fainted.
On a crowded roadway, an elderly woman stood at the edge of the pavement and begged:
Her eyes were moist and her speech trailed off. She added, “I have nothing to feed my granddaughter, so please save something for bread, son.”
A man of forty-five walked by. Wearing an expensive suit, a confident gait, and a little cocky squint, he disregarded her and was prepared to keep on. But for some reason, he stopped. His gaze unintentionally fell upon the elderly woman’s emerald, vintage earrings, which were tastefully set in a maple leaf-shaped gold frame.
He froze, staring at the earrings as if struck by lightning.
“Where did you get those earrings, Ma’am?” he remarked quietly.
With a sad look on her face, the old woman replied:
A long time ago, a friend gave these to me. Just a decent individual.
But the man could not take his eyes off of them. They seemed uncomfortably familiar. He felt his heart constrict. He thought about his beautiful, pregnant wife, whom he had lost more than five years before in delivery.
Then, too, his wife’s most beloved earrings, a gift from his late mother and a protective charm, disappeared.
Anxiety and rage began to fill his chest. He decided to take it a step farther and pondered:
— Have you ever worked in a medical facility before? Maybe as a cleaner or assistant?
The woman lowered her eyes and nodded silently.
Yes. “I had a period like that,” she mumbled.
“Then tell me how you got those earrings,” the man asked tensely.
The woman sighed, gripped her fists, and confessed:
They belonged to a woman in my care who was in childbirth. I took them after she passed away. Despite my embarrassment, I was worried that my granddaughter would go hungry since life was hard.
The man looked at her with a mixture of emotions, including anger at betrayal, anguish at the loss, and a realization that life sometimes forces people to make snap judgments.
“Those earrings are her memory,” he said softly. Give them back. And maybe we can figure out a way to help your granddaughter together.
Without a word, the old woman removed the earrings and handed them to the man.
