A police officer got out of his car, walked over to a coffin he saw in the center of the pavement, opened the lid, and froze in disbelief
The sergeant started his shift as normal, drinking coffee in a paper cup and providing the dispatcher with a brief update. He had been patrolling the city’s roadways for years, so he knew every lane, curve, and sign that might indicate problems before aid could get there.
He drove his black-and-blue patrol car smoothly on the asphalt, the streetlights reflecting in the glass. The radio crackled with background noise. Everything was silent.
He saw a strange silhouette up ahead as he turned west on a quiet street. In the middle of the right lane was a coffin. A real wooden coffin with a metal handle.
The sergeant slammed on the brakes. The warning lights flashed on their own. He removed the key from the ignition and opened the door slowly, almost instinctively. The door creaked open and he stepped out onto the street. His hand instinctively went to his holster. He sensed that something wasn’t right.
He approached the coffin slowly. In his ears, every step sounded like a dull thud. The wind shifted his clothes a little under the protective vest.
He stopped half a meter from the object. He leaned forward, holding his breath, and carefully lifted the lid. And froze in fear.
The coffin contained nothing.
The scariest thing was that. There was no lining or corpse inside, only emptiness and the faint smell of new varnish.
He radioed the dispatcher right away. Soon, it was learned that a car transporting many new coffins for a funeral home had been in an accident at the other end of town.
When it hit the curb, one of the coffins actually flew out of the back compartment, crossed the truck bed, and wound up in the middle of the road. The driver was unaware of the loss until a few hours later, when he was unloading; he chose to disregard it and drove on.
But it wasn’t everything.
After reviewing the street camera footage, the sergeant noticed that there were no cars or pedestrians within 300 meters of the coffin’s initial appearance on the road. As if the street had been quiet for a while.
