When Carmen and Lupita Andrade were born in 2002, doctors were unsure if they would survive. The twins were joined at the torso, a very rare condition known as conjoined twins. At first, specialists believed they might not live past infancy, but the sisters proved everyone wrong.
Their bodies are connected in complex ways. They share parts of their liver, several ribs, portions of their digestive and circulatory systems, and parts of their reproductive organs. Because each twin controls only one leg, even simple movements require teamwork, balance, and constant coordination.
Doctors once suggested separating them through surgery, but the sisters refused. The operation carried serious risks, and neither of them wanted to endanger the other’s life.
