Walking onto the America’s Got Talent stage can be intimidating for any performer, and Daniel Joyner was visibly feeling the pressure. At 17, he was stepping in front of four judges and a massive television audience after having performed for crowds of only a few hundred people back home.
Then he started singing Otis Redding’s “Try a Little Tenderness,” and the first impression began to change. Daniel’s voice had a depth and classic quality that seemed far beyond what his youthful appearance suggested. Even though his nerves affected his stage presence, there was clearly a genuine vocal talent underneath them.
The judges didn’t simply focus on his imperfections. Instead, they saw potential and encouraged him to become more confident and expressive as a performer. Simon specifically told Daniel that his voice was fantastic and that he should get out of his comfort zone.
In the end, every judge voted yes, giving the young singer another chance to show what he could become.
