It may surprise you to learn that roller skates were originally used in a stage show in London in 1743. The first recorded roller skate invention was created by John Joseph Merlin in 1760 while he was residing in London.

It’s interesting to note that the United States even contemplated using roller skates to carry men across Europe during World War II in an effort to save gas, though this plan didn’t quite work out.

In 1935, roller skating really began to gain popularity in the US. Many people still treasure the skating frenzy that began in the 1970s when skating rinks started playing disco tunes.

If you grew up in that era, you may remember the robust metal skates that were fastened to your shoes. As your feet expanded, they even made adjustments. You might not recall, though, the metal item that was frequently observed hanging from skaters’ necks.

In order to have the skate key close at hand and never misplaced throughout their thrilling rides, many skaters wore it as a necklace.
