Kate Cassidy spoke of the devastating moment she learned of her boyfriend, Liam Payne, a former member of One Direction, having passed away.
In a heartfelt interview, Cassidy, 25, revealed that Payne, who was purportedly about to pop the question, had tragically passed away on October 16 of last year.
While the couple was staying at the CasaSur hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where they had been dating for two years, the singer passed tragically after falling from a third-floor balcony.
A Depressing End to a Trip
Cassidy and Payne had traveled to Argentina in early October to see a performance by his former bandmate, Niall Horan. Cassidy returned to their house in Florida a week later, but Payne stayed longer. It was during this time that the horrible accident occurred.
The director of Argentina’s emergency medical services, Alberto Crescenti, confirmed the incident’s details during a broadcast on the country’s Todo Noticias TV channel.
“The 911 integrated public safety system notified us that someone was in a hotel’s internal courtyard at 17:04,” Crescenti stated. At 17:11, the SAME team arrived and verified the man’s demise. Later on, we found out that he was a band singer.
He went on, “Unfortunately, his fall injuries were incompatible with life.” There was no possibility of resuscitation.
The Moment Cassidy Acquired Knowledge
Cassidy, who left the couple’s Florida home and is now back in New Jersey, described the horrifying moment she found out about Payne’s death.
“I feel fortunate that I didn’t find out over social media because I just couldn’t even imagine that,” she said in a recent interview with The Sun. “As I was browsing TikTok at home with our dog, one of Liam’s friends called.”
She initially struggled to understand the news.
“That moment… “My mind is blank; it’s blacked out,” Cassidy recalled. “I didn’t believe it at first. I thought it was either a rumor or a fake story made up to increase views. Then I suddenly started to feel nervous. “Why would anyone fabricate this?” I questioned myself. Is this correct?
As reality set in, she attempted to contact Payne.
I tried to get in touch with him. I made nearly all of the calls. My mother stated she caught the first flight to join me once I got in touch with his family. The couple’s dog, Nala, began jumping up at me as if I was attempting to play when I was pacing the house, I remember. I didn’t get any sleep at all that night.
Honoring Liam Payne
Cassidy discussed how bizarre Payne’s death still feels, admitting that she sometimes speaks about him in the present tense because “it doesn’t feel fully real.” She thinks about him “every second of every day.”
Despite his worldwide fame, she praised Payne’s humble and grounded manner and called him her “soulmate.”
“He was one of the most common people you could ever hope to meet,” she said.
