When you consider Hilary Swank, words like “talent,” “grit,” and “unstoppable” probably come to mind.
But before she walked the red carpet and provided amazing performances in award-winning movies, her road wasn’t so lovely.
Hilary Swank was raised in a trailer park.
Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, and raised in a trailer park in Bellingham, Washington, Hilary Swank made her Hollywood debut as a young teenager driven by ambition and unflinching determination.
As a young child with a keen interest in performance, she was encouraged to take part in school plays and local theater productions.
I still have good memories of some of my teachers, who were amazing to me. But other teachers I spoke to said, “You know what? You think of this dream as a hobby. Swank told CBS that her mother’s unwavering support is all that matters.
My mother said, “I could do anything I wanted in life.” Swank told the newspaper, “As long as I worked hard enough,” following her second Oscar victory in 2005. It still makes me feel really emotional today because, you know, I never really questioned it. She just never ceased having faith in me.
When she was fifteen, her parents, Judy and Stephen, got divorced.
Judy decided to go to Los Angeles so Hilary could pursue her dream, seizing the chance to support her daughter.
The pair packed up their belongings and left for Hollywood with little more than hope as their compass.
How to Travel to Los Angeles
She needed to decide something. As mom and my father were ready to split ways, she responded, “Let’s go to California,” remembers Swank. So we took a $75 Mobil card and headed out to California.
Once in Los Angeles, the couple struggled, living in their car as Swank looked for auditions.
Our acquaintance was trying to sell their house. They said, “You know, there’s no furniture, but you can stay there at night.” Then you have to go during the day so we can try to sell it,” Swank says. So we bought air mattresses. The air was bleak. Sleeped on the air mattresses. Early in the morning, they left.
Their period of homelessness was brief, though.
First roles
After residing in California for a period, Swank quit South Pasadena High School to focus on her acting career. She said, “I’m not proud to say I didn’t finish high school,” after considering her options.
I was totally cut off. I didn’t feel like I fit in. I was completely out of place. I didn’t even get the impression that the teachers wanted me there. “I just felt like I wasn’t seen or understood,” she continued.
After making brief appearances on TV shows like Growing Pains and Camp Wilder, the young actress had her breakthrough in 1994 with her role in The Next Karate Kid.
The movie helped her get experience and establish herself in Hollywood, even though it didn’t make her a household name.
She went on to have a significant role on the hit television series Beverly Hills, 90210. Swank was the lead in the eighth season of the show, but her role was written out after just 16 episodes.
Swank said, “Fired, not dropped.” “And I thought that if I’m not a good enough actor for 90210, maybe I should [pack it in].” I don’t know. I was devastated.
But instead of destroying her confidence, the failure fueled her fire.
Beginning a career
Swank’s life changed in 1999 when she was chosen to play Brandon Teena in Boys Don’t Cry. Since the film was based on the true story of a transgender man who was tragically murdered, Swank’s performance had to be emotionally honest and transformative.
Despite only getting $3,000 for the role, Swank won the Academy Award for Best Actress, proving that a remarkable performance can happen without a high salary.
“So, I had an Academy Award and I didn’t have health insurance,” Swank stated. “The life of the actor.”
Following her Oscar victory, she starred in highly acclaimed films, including Million Dollar Baby (2004), for which she received a second Oscar. “I don’t know what I did in this life to deserve this,” she remarked. In her winning speech, she said, “I’m just a girl from a trailer park who had a dream.”
But it wasn’t simply her talent that set Swank apart; it was also her willingness to take risks, take on challenging tasks, and push herself.
Clint Eastwood, the director and star of Million Dollar Baby, remarked of Swank’s abilities to play a professional boxer, “I just thought, ‘Yeah, this gal would be great to have.” if she can be trained by us. He proposed that we give her a little more weight to make her look like a warrior. She was like a feather. Nonetheless, she had a strong work ethic.
What brings joy to her heart
In order to care for her father, Stephen Michael Swank, a veteran of the Air Force and Air National Guard, who needed a risky lung transplant, she took a break from her enormously successful career in 2014.
The one-year sabbatical was prolonged to three years since her father’s recovery from the invasive operation was delayed.
While continuing to care for her father, who remained with her until his passing in 2021, the Alaska Daily actress returned to filming.
Swank, the founder of the Hilaroo Foundation, generously gives her time and notoriety to promote a range of causes, including animal welfare and cancer research.
In an interview with Health, she said, “Animals were one of the things that filled my heart because none of them looked at me for anything other than who I am.” They would always travel with me and be a part of my journey, it became evident very quickly. Many folks can’t touch my heart the way they can.
A new family
The Freedom Writers actress struggled to find love with a human as she inherited her mother’s propensity to prioritize the interests of others over her own.
She wed Chad Lowe in 1997, but the two parted ways in 2006 due to Chad Lowe’s struggles with substance misuse. Chad Lowe was the younger brother of the well-known Rob Lowe.
Swank told USA Today that having her ailing father live at home helped her find a decent man.
Practically speaking, it’s a great way to screen people out. “You and your dad live together?” I inquired. “The response to that helps you move through things faster,” said Swank, who met her current husband Phillip Schneider while caring for her father.
On April 10, 2023, she and Schneider announced the arrival of their twins, a son and a daughter named Ohm and Aya. Her father’s birthday was April 16, and the babies arrived before their due date.
In an interview with Extra TV, Swank said, “I was working and not in the right relationship until…all the things had to come together and be right.”
What follows?
Because she sees Eastwood as a mentor, Swank, who is busy chasing after twin babies, says she would love to work with him again.
I love Clint Eastwood for all the same reasons that everyone else does. We’ve actually been talking about searching for something,” she told the Independent. All we have to do is change our schedules, but I would do everything he requested. Without even having to read it, I would just say, “Yes!” in response.
