Why Ryan O’Neal’s son wasn’t invited to the star’s funeral

Ryan O’Neal passed away on December 8, 2023, at the age of 82, following a battle with leukemia, prostate cancer, and congestive heart failure. Although O’Neal is well-known for his roles in Love Story and Barry Lyndon, his personal life was marred by scandals, particularly his turbulent relationship with actress Farrah Fawcett.

In addition to his son Redmond, who was in a state hospital, his two other children, Griffin and Tatum O’Neal, did not attend his funeral. Griffin, who has been estranged from his father for 17 years, revealed that he was not invited following a heated disagreement. Although they had a bad relationship, Griffin had intended to attend and say goodbye. However, Tatum voiced her sorrow at her father’s passing and made apologies with him in the late 2000s.

Ryan’s wish to be with Farrah was fulfilled when only about 25 people showed up for the little burial service at Westwood burial Park, where he was buried next to her. However, his decision caused controversy because some claimed it went against Farrah’s final wishes. Despite the issues, friends supported Ryan and Farrah’s deep love.

Patrick O’Neal, Ryan’s son, has been vocal in his support of his father’s legacy, denouncing those who criticize him and even criticizing his father’s removal from the Emmys tribute segment earlier that year. Eventually, Ryan received recognition during the 2024 Emmys’ “In Memoriam” tribute.
