A video of Indian elephants performing a human-style baby elephant funeral was posted last Friday by Parveen Kaswan, a forest ranger with the Indian Foreign Service.
Kawan’s video went viral as stunned social media users flocked to express their wonder and sympathy for the elephants.
The video, which was posted on Twitter, shows an elephant coming out of some bushes with the body of a dead baby elephant in its trunk.

The adult elephant laid down its body to shield it as it waited for other elephants to join. The newborn elephant was surrounded by more elephants, who moved in a line that resembled a funeral procession.
The original elephant then reared the baby once more, with other elephants following.

On Twitter, the message garnered over 12,000 likes and over 5,000 retweets.

Elephants have been shown to grieve for their dead in the past, just like people do.
