While her co-star Tom Cruise became a global celebrity, De Mornay’s career took a different turn that few could have predicted.
I recently came upon a black-and-white photo of Tom Cruise standing next to a beautiful young woman. She had a very 1980s aspect, and her eyes captivated me right away. At first, I thought it might be Heather Locklear, but I quickly realized it wasn’t. Instead, I soon learned that her name was Rebecca De Mornay.
Unusual childhood
Rebecca De Mornay was born in Santa Rosa, California, in 1959. Her upbringing has been described by many as peculiar, even chaotic.
Her parents were Wally George, a radio DJ who later became a right-wing TV personality, and Julie George, who wanted to be an actress.
When Rebecca was just two years old, her parents divorced. Unfortunately, when Rebecca was just five years old, the scientist her mother married passed away.
Then, after this loss, her mother decided to take Rebecca and her brother on a tour of Europe. They moved about in a VW van before settling in a little Austrian town where Rebecca enrolled in school. Because of her itinerant existence, Rebecca had to mature quickly, and she was sometimes seen as much older than she actually was.
She was courageous, responsible, and made her own judgments early in life. When she was eighteen, she returned to the United States to pursue a career. Rebecca initially had a passion for singing and aspired to be a folk singer or songwriter.
She later considered acting.
“I started thinking about acting one day while walking down Santa Monica Boulevard in Las Vegas,” she said in 1994.
The only thing I could relate to was my mother’s early ambition to pursue a career in acting. She hadn’t really done anything other than be a mother. She had said to me when I was a young teenager, “I think you could be very gifted as an actress.” This poisoned it, in my opinion, because you don’t want to follow your mother’s instructions.
Breakthrough
After moving to Los Angeles in 1980, De Mornay enrolled in the esteemed Lee Strasberg Institute to study acting.
Despite playing a small role in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1981 film One from the Heart, De Mornay’s breakthrough performance in Risky Business, which was released two years later, was what launched her to stardom.
In the 1983 film, Rebecca plays a seductive call girl named Lana who teaches a teenage Tom Cruise some valuable life lessons. Her porcelain-doll features, piercing blue eyes, and blond bangs made her perfect for the role. She radiated mystique and was kind of a mystery character in the movie.
Although the 1983 comedy is primarily remembered as the impetus for Cruise’s ascent to prominence, it also aided in the development of a solid career for the then-unknown 24-year-old De Mornay.
“I had only been auditioning for six months, which is nothing, when I got the female lead in a feature film that went on to become a monster hit,” De Mornay said in an interview with The Los Angeles Times in 1993.
“I had a nine-year ride on one movie.”
Despite the pressure to choose a well-known actress, director Paul Brickman was determined to use De Mornay. After trying out 400 women in the US and Europe, he stuck to his guns and made sure she was cast.
Despite having very little prior experience, De Mornay was able to perform the role so convincingly because she identified with the character Lana. Their life stories shared certain commonalities.
“All of a sudden, there was a section that I knew and that fit me like a glove after going through a lot in my life, including family problems and turmoil.”
According to De Mornay and many others, Lana was the “soul of the movie.”
I wanted to protect her dignity regardless of whether she is having sex for money. She asserted that she had kept some of her spirit and integrity.
An intense bond with Tom Cruise
From the start, De Mornay was sure that Risky Business would succeed, but she had no idea that it would also result in a new romance. In addition to their professional relationship, she and Tom Cruise fell in love during the shoot. Their on-screen chemistry was undeniable, and the flames continued to fly off-camera.
In his 2017 memoir, Curtis Armstrong, who costarred with Tom and Rebecca in Risky Business, recalls, “It’s no secret that Tom had a passionate affair with De Mornay during the filming.”
De Mornay was then dating actor Harry Dean Stanton, whom she had met during the early 1980s filming of One from the Heart. However, their romance ended quickly once she and Cruise began to fall in love.
De Mornay quipped that she found Cruise “annoying” when they first met, but she quickly warmed up to him. Their bond swiftly blossomed into a romance that lasted for two and a half years.
De Mornay was now in a state of exaltation. She was one of the most beautiful names in Hollywood and deeply in love. Reflecting on their rapid rise to fame, De Mornay described the experience as both overwhelming and thrilling.
But while Cruise shot to fame and became one of the most famous actors in film history, De Mornay’s momentum halted and the industry lost interest in her.
“I was a more complicated, mysterious presence, innately than Tom,” she told The Wrap in 2023. His presence is more akin to, I would say, a dominant chord in musical terms, whereas I am more of a minor chord.In America, major chords are very popular.
However, her career did not completely disappear. With varying degrees of success, De Mornay continued her work throughout the 1980s. Her biggest hit in 1992, following Risky Business, was The Hand That Rocks the Cradle.
The psychological thriller was a big financial success, and De Mornay’s portrayal of a bitter widow who infiltrates the life of one of her late husband’s accusers left a lasting impression.
I thought I would be hated by everyone as I was making it. But when the film came out, everyone loved my performance,” she told the LA Times.
During her career, De Mornay produced an average of one film annually. Despite her talent, she didn’t always obtain the major parts that people might have expected because she never aggressively pursued fame.
It’s not like my skill level has improved. In retrospect, despite the quick ups and downs in Hollywood, I got a good education. After a major hit, I experienced several low points. But it all helped me try to put some distance between us,” she says.

After meeting actor-turned-sportscaster Patrick O’Neal in 1995, she made the decision to prioritize her family. They raised two kids together, Sophia (born November 16, 1997) and Veronica (born March 31, 2001).
De Mornay has personal experience with the tremendous challenges of balancing motherhood with a career in Hollywood. While Identity was filming, she brought her daughter Sophia to the set. She also had to turn down jobs that needed her to travel or spend a lot of time away from her family. She was unwilling to relocate in search of new job opportunities because her primary objective was to provide her children with a stable and secure upbringing.
How some of these famous actresses are able to have children is beyond me. Maybe they’re good at multitasking? “I’m not,” she told The Wrap.
De Mornay and O’Neal parted ways in 2002.
Age discrimination in Hollywood may have made it difficult for De Mornay to compete with younger actresses. This issue has affected not only De Mornay but also a number of her colleagues in the field. During a talk with her friend Carol Kane, De Mornay said, “It felt like I sent an invisible telegram to Hollywood saying, ‘Don’t hire me,'” when she turned 40.
One of the main causes of the problem is the absence of fulfilling obligations for women as they age, which has undoubtedly impacted De Mornay’s profession as well. Nevertheless, she is one of the lucky few who have been able to continue working as an actress.
“It has always been important to me to choose roles where there [is] some model of strength to women,” she said, regardless of what women do or how they do it.
