The sergeant noticed a girl standing in the middle of the street in the rain with a pink rucksack, but she dropped the bag and ran away when she saw the policeman
The police sergeant was on patrol in the center of the city, just as he had been for years. The streets were less packed than usual that evening due to the persistent rain. The patrol car’s headlights briefly highlighted the figures of the few pedestrians hurrying home under their umbrellas.
He took in his surroundings while driving carefully. His experience taught him that rainy evenings are often the time for unforeseen events.
At an intersection, he noticed a strange sight: a young girl standing motionless in the pouring rain, resembling a forgotten toy in the middle of the road. A small pink knapsack hung from her back, and a gray raincoat hung over her thin shoulders.
Immediately suspicious, the sergeant slowed and came to a stop.
“Little girl!” he said, then opened the door and stepped out into the rain.
Over the silent street, his words echoed. The girl flinched back, whirled, gave the officer a quick look, and then started running.
With a shout of “Stop!” the sergeant rushed after her.
Before vanishing down a shadowy alley, he saw her tear the knapsack off her shoulders and toss it onto the wet tarmac.
The sergeant ran up and bent to take up the bag. Despite its apparent weight, the fabric was completely wet. Something was inside.
He was shocked by what he saw when he opened it
Inside were a number of meticulously wrapped parcels in clear plastic bags. He immediately recognized it as amphetamine, which had been given out in little “doses.”
But it wasn’t everything. Another bag included a USB drive, numerous SIM cards, and a stack of fake passports with images of different children.
He felt a chill run through him. Drug trafficking combined with forged kid documents? This was far more serious than a typical street-level issue.
He quickly looked around, but there was no sign of the girl.
Seizing the knapsack tightly, the sergeant realized that he had inadvertently found something far more dangerous and terrible than a child lost in the storm.
