The driver of a truck was shocked to find out why a dog had suddenly sprung out onto the road and nearly got hit by it.
It was a typical morning. The sun had just begun to peek over the horizon, casting a soft golden glow along the country road. A long-haul truck driver was racing to deliver his load on time, but he had a long voyage ahead of him and a harsh clock.
As the truck’s wheels gripped the tarmac and the engine hummed steadily, a dog leaped out of the bushes on the side of the road and nearly fell beneath them. It had shaggy black and white fur and growled wildly, as if it were blocking the way. It was too late; the vehicle had already passed the animal and something dark that was lying in the middle of the road. He quickly reacted, screaming the tires and applying the brakes.
“What the hell?” The driver grumbled as he got out of the vehicle, his heart pounding.
The dog didn’t run away. It went around the truck and stopped at the black bundle, barking and staring at the man as if calling him over.
The driver saw a typical black garbage bag as he approached. It was still there, albeit the wheels had scuffed it a little.
“What was it about?” he whispered as he bent over and slowly ripped open the bag’s edge.
When he saw what was inside, his blood became cold.
A baby was inside of it. A little boy. Tiny, wrapped in a tiny blanket, hardly moving or breathing, but alive.
The motorist immediately called for an ambulance and wrapped the baby in his own jacket. The dog appeared to have achieved its objective as it sat comfortably beside him.
It was later learned that the boy had been born in secret by a young mother who, possibly in desperation or panic, decided to throw him out on the side of the road like rubbish.
But fate had different plans. Because the dog’s instinct survived human cruelty, the baby was spared.
The driver thought about how the dog had saved his life for a long time after that.
