Farmer finds newborn calf freezing in the snow — and saves his life with a hot tub

Many animals are vulnerable to the risks of cold weather, just like humans are. It is always encouraging to see people going above and beyond to keep them warm because they are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia.

Like the farmer who had to make do with very little and used an exceedingly creative and surprising method to save the life of a young, frozen cow.

Dean Gangwer of Rossville, Indiana, keeps cattle on his land. In 2015, Dean came upon a stunning new addition to his land on a chilly morning.

He had no idea that one of his cows had given birth in the middle of the night. Sadly, it was chilly when she gave birth to her calf on top of a snowdrift.

Dean was struggling to keep his eyes open as the calf was breathing violently. To try to save the cow, he raced it to his house.

He was knowledgeable enough about cattle to determine that the calf required a warm bath. And Dean just so happened to have his hot tub, ready to go, and the ideal bath for a cow!

As bizarre as it may sound, the strategy was surprisingly effective.

We enjoyed a wonderful hour-long bath after I entered fully clothed and held Leroy up to prevent him from drowning, Dean told WRTV. “We both came out warm, and I think the ending is going to be fantastic for him.”

Warm, comforting blankets were placed around the farmer’s calf after that calming jacuzzi treatment.

The calf’s name is Leroy. Eventually, the cow’s body temperature stabilized, and he was prepared to rejoin the herd.

The farmer continues, “It won’t happen frequently, but sharing his hot tub with the cows was a quick and considerate decision that helped save the little cow.”

He declared, “Leroy’s hot-tubbing is over.” “Obviously, his days in the hot tub are over, but he might continue to sunbathe in the grass on occasion going forward.”
