My spouse and I chose to adopt a kid because we were unable to have biological children together. For the past year, we have been welcoming Jennifer, a four-year-old girl. She is an energetic child who is constantly happy.
Since she moved in, everything in our home has gotten better. We spend a lot of time together, and I’m even pleased when I see how at ease Jennifer is around us. She adjusted to her new life so swiftly that I now find it impossible to envision my life without her.
Jennifer recently came over to me, appearing very serious, and whispered, “Mom, don’t trust Dad,” while she was playing in the garden and spotted my husband leaving the home. I was a little surprised to hear that, but she had such a determined look in her eyes, as if she knew something I didn’t. I chose to pay close attention, and what I discovered really disturbed me.
For a four-year-old, Jennifer’s expression was quite somber.
As soon as she realized she had said too much, she clutched to me.
I started to quiz her in an attempt to learn more.
