We are occasionally reminded of our intimate relationship with all living creatures in a world that is turbulent and unpredictable.
Millions of people were impressed by a wonderful performance by a 160-pound female gorilla named Binti Jua at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois more than 20 years ago.
The unlikely hero
On a bright July afternoon in 1996, the day of a three-year-old kid at the zoo took a terrible turn. After scaling a barrier that encircled the gorilla enclosure, the child fell 25 feet to the ground below, suffering severe injuries.
The boy’s mother and guests screamed in horror, not knowing what would happen next. Inside the cage, seven huge primates were lounging.
Among them was Binti Jua, a rare female gorilla from the western lowlands.
The Kankakee Fire Department’s catp. Jeff Bruno can still clearly recall that day in the summer.
He told CBS in 2016 that it was August 16, 2:10 p.m.
Jeff and two other families were at the zoo when they heard the boy’s mother scream and saw Binti Jua’s incredible response.
When the fall occurred, the child hit his head and fainted.
Bruno offered to help while his brother-in-law grabbed his already-running camera and captured the amazing rescue. The video went viral later and continues to draw in views to this day.
Without the cameras, the narrative might have been hard to believe, yet in the midst of the confusion, the gorilla stealthily walked up to the unconscious youngster.
Despite the danger, Binti Jua’s maternal instincts immediately took over. In the video, she can be seen scanning her surroundings, looking up, left, and right as if she needs help. Her instinctive understanding of what to do is astounding.
She kept her infant son, Koola, safe and secure in her arms while he was still on her back.

After placing the youngster close to the exhibit entrance, Binti Jua quickly withdrew, enabling zookeepers and paramedics to safely extract him while zoo employees chased the other gorillas away with a hose.
We assessed the youngster and then covered him up. “I think we used duct tape because that’s all that was there,” Bruno said.
According to some, the gorilla recognized how crucial it was to get the boy to safety, which is why she made this deliberate choice. The child was harmed, but he survived the ordeal with only a broken hand and minor bruises.
The story of Binti Jua’s heroic actions quickly spread like wildfire and came to symbolize empathy and compassion. People all throughout the world were shocked by how near a human youngster was to a gorilla. Following the incident, the zoo received little criticism.
The media couldn’t stop gushing about the unintended hero for months, and visitors flocked to the zoo to witness firsthand the gorilla’s affectionate and protective nature.

Despite not being a human, Binti Jua was named one of People magazine’s “Most Intriguing People” and Newsweek’s “Hero of the Year.”
Even more astounding is the fact that, despite being hand-raised and educated to care for infant gorillas, Binti Jua’s success was not just the result of her zoo training.
Her actions showed a greater sense of empathy and care, which is a sign of true animal altruism, according to experts like primatologist Frans de Waal.
Her maternal instincts were as natural as any mother’s protective instincts, even if she had received zoo training. This shows that everyone has the innate need to protect, care for, and nurture others.
And what happened after that
The tragedy sparked expert debates as well. Some questioned if Binti Jua’s behavior was the result of rigorous zoo training, while others said it showed inherent sensitivity.
Because she had been hand-raised by humans rather than by her mother, who had rejected her at birth, Binti received specialized training to care for newborn gorillas and learned how to bring her own children to zoo personnel for exams.
Gorillas are considered to be frightening animals due to their powerful body, which consists of stocky frames, heavy bones, and long arms.
Hollywood’s portrayals of them as violent, however, are more to blame because films like King Kong have reinforced the idea. But as Binti Jua has shown, these prejudices are completely false.
Jambó, another gorilla at the Jersey Zoo, had a similar incident after saving a toddler who had fallen into his cage. However, the debate regarding what motivates animals to act in such compassionate ways does not lessen the beauty of the acts themselves.
Which boy was saved by Binti Jua?
Very little is known about the child Binti Jua saved that day since his parents asked that his name not be made public. We do know that initially he was considered seriously ill, but that full recovery was expected.
He had injury to his skull, a broken bone in one hand, and multiple cuts and scrapes.
A few days after the incident, one of his doctors shared an update on social media, saying the child was doing exceptionally well.
He is acting in a really normal manner. He doesn’t remember the episodes, and we haven’t asked him about it.
In a time when it seems like the world is growing more and more divided, the tale of Binti Jua serves as a reminder that kindness may come from the most unexpected places.
Whether it’s a mom protecting their child or a gorilla protecting an unnamed baby, everyone has an inbuilt drive to show compassion and care for others.
