Why Ryan O’Neal’s son wasn’t invited to the star’s funeral

Ryan O’Neal battled two types of cancer till the last end.

When a great actor passed away in 2023, Hollywood grieved him, but his own son did not attend the funeral.

At the age of 82, Ryan O’Neal passed away on December 8, 2023, following a lengthy battle with leukemia and prostate cancer. The cause of death was congestive heart failure. O’Neal’s final pictures showed that his health had significantly declined. The once-enthusiastic entertainer, known for his charisma and charm, appeared worn out and feeble.

The award-winning actor rose to fame as the quintessential leading man in timeless films such as the tragic Love Story and Stanley Kubrick’s historical epic Barry Lyndon. In his heyday, he was a real hottie who captivated audiences and gained the admiration of women everywhere.

But his private life was often overshadowed by scandal, especially his tumultuous connection with actress Farrah Fawcett. For those who may not remember, Farrah was a pioneer in the 1970s, a cutting-edge sex icon that inspired teenage girls and boys alike.

Boys were captivated by her beauty, and girls wanted to emulate her signature look. In the 1980s, she proved she was more than just a pretty face by showcasing her skills as a successful actor.

Redmond The son of Ryan and Farrah, James Fawcett O’Neal, was born in 1985. At the day of Ryan’s funeral, Redmond was noticeably absent from the event. This would not have been startling considering that the 38-year-old was confined in a California state hospital at the time of his father’s funeral.

Throughout his life, Redmond Fawcett O’Neal has struggled with drug and alcohol addiction. He also suffers from mental illnesses such bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and antisocial personality disorder.

These challenges have led to several incarcerations and a prolonged stay in a mental health facility. Redmond declined to meet his father when he was undergoing treatment because of their strained relationship, despite Ryan O’Neal’s pledge to Farrah Fawcett on her deathbed that he would look after Redmond.

This situation was very different from that of Redmond’s mother, Farrah, who passed away in 2009.

At the moment, Redmond was bound by her bed. To her funeral, he too wore the same restrictions.

Three of the four children are absent.

Even more astonishing than the fact that many understood Redmond’s absence from the funeral was the rumored absence of two of his other children from the 82-year-old star’s modest memorial service at Westwood Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.

One of O’Neal’s sons, Griffin O’Neal, revealed that he was not even invited to the function.

I am the damned son who told the truth. There are bad times in this household. Ryan claimed that the fact that he never had to apologize to anyone was an indication of love.

Griffin, the son of O’Neal’s first marriage to Joanna Moore, came 2,000 miles from his home in Houston, Texas, to attend the memorial service, according to the New York Post.

However, upon arriving, he learned that the service would not take place until the weekend following Christmas.

“I wasn’t even invited to send him off,” Griffin O’Neal told The Post.

Griffin stated that he had not spoken to his father in seventeen years. Their relationship ended in 2007 after a violent altercation at Ryan O’Neal’s home in Malibu, where Griffin allegedly swung a fireplace poker at his father and Ryan pointed a gun at him. “I could have hit him, but I missed,” said O’Neal.

Despite this history, Griffin still wanted to say goodbye to his father. However, that wasn’t the case with his brother, Patrick O’Neal, a 57-year-old sportscaster from Los Angeles, who had grown closer to his father recently.

According to the Post, Patrick organized the funeral.

The memorial service was attended by only around 25 individuals, including Patrick’s mother, the 79-year-old actress Leigh Taylor-Young, and Ryan’s second wife. Given the significant influence Ryan O’Neal had on Hollywood history, one may have expected his memorial service to be an extravagant affair.

Tatum O’Neal, Ryan’s daughter from his marriage to actress Joanna Moore, was also not present, according to the New York Post. Their connection was complicated and had existed for a long time.

“As a father, I have no hope. I don’t know why.In a 2009 interview with Vanity Fair, O’Neal said, “I don’t think I was meant to be a father.”

reestablished contact with his daughter.

Fortunately, Ryan and Tatum reconciled in the late 2000s after years of pain and a 20-year separation.

Following a stroke caused by a heroin overdose in 2020, Tatum had two reunions with her father, including a trip to Malibu for his birthday in April 2023. They seem to have gotten closer just before Ryan passed away.

“I feel great sorrow with my father’s passing,” Tatum said in a statement after his loss.

He was everything to me. He loved me as much as I loved him, and I knew it. I will always miss him, and I am so glad we left ways amicably,” Tatum added.

A redwood-colored coffin

According to the Daily Mail, the short service was held inside the chapel at the celebrity-frequented Westwood Memorial Park Cemetery.

Following the ceremony, O’Neal’s redwood-colored coffin was taken to his eternal resting place beside his lifelong companion, Farrah Fawcett.

O’Neal has apologized for his relationship with Farrah after her death. He said he didn’t think he spent enough time with her.

Despite their issues, the two of them supported each other no matter what. Farrah had taken care of O’Neal when he was diagnosed with leukemia, and he had helped her overcome anal cancer.

Perhaps in an attempt to satisfy his desire to have spent more time with the late actress, O’Neal requested to be buried next to the lady he loved. In fact, half of Farrah’s large gravestone has been empty since her passing, awaiting the addition of Ryan O’Neal’s name.

Ignoring Farrah’s final wishes?

However, Farrah’s funeral was controversial, just like other parts of their relationship.

Fawcett’s college sweetheart from the University of Texas, Greg Lott, came out and accused O’Neal of not following Farrah’s final instructions.

“She never wanted a monument or a burial where people could come and stare at her,” Lott told The Post.

“Ryan created this story as if it were a romantic tale, and they (his lawyers) took over her life at the end by sedating her and fabricating documents.”

Craig Nevius, Farrah’s friend and creator of the 2005 reality TV show Chasing Farrah, expressed similar views:

Nevius said, “I don’t think he had the authority to do that, but he obviously did decide that she would be buried and him later with her.”

It’s been quite odd to have her name at the top of this big gravestone and nothing at the bottom. His name and the words “Love Story” will soon appear there, I predict.

The gravestone has no romantic tale inscribed on it.

However, as “Love Story” is not inscribed on the gravestone, it did not happen. Instead, both Farrah’s and Ryan’s names are written there, along with their dates.

Additionally, Ryan and his gang have flatly disputed the accusations that they pushed through anything. Alana Stewart, 79, Farrah’s longtime friend and Rod Stewart’s ex-wife, denied allegations that O’Neal took advantage of her or exaggerated their relationship.

She died in his arms, yet she was there for him during his leukemia. I thought their relationship was a beautiful love story. Indeed, there were some gloomy times. Although Ryan might be unpredictable, he may also be the sweetest, most generous, and funniest person on the planet.

defends his father

Ryan O’Neal’s son Patrick has stated that he will not allow anyone to harm the actor’s name without consequences, suggesting that he is as committed to protecting his father.

Former sportscaster and current Los Angeles Angels play-by-play commentator Patrick wrote on Instagram, “If you choose to say shit about my dad, even though you have no idea what you’re talking about, you will be called out. I advise you to look in the mirror first if you choose that path.”

Patrick O’Neal was a critical critic of the Television Academy before the Emmys on September 15, 2024.

At tonight’s Emmys, I don’t think @televisionacad would recognize my dad during the “in memoriam” segment. “I am a member of the academy, and despite my best efforts, they would not tell me if this TV LEGEND will be on the telecast,” Patrick wrote on Instagram.

The TV Academy completely failed when he wasn’t added back in January. My darling wife, Summer, and I will be enjoying a nice birthday supper instead of watching the show.

The controversy over Emmy

Earlier in January, Patrick’s father was left out of the memorial tribute.

“I was told that my dad wasn’t in the ‘in memoriam,’ even though I wasn’t watching the Oscars,” Patrick posted on X, the former Twitter. I kind of wish I didn’t know now, but I would have learned. Anger and despair together have the power to paralyze.

But in September of this year, Patrick was able to see his father’s honoring.

I’m appreciative that the Television Academy included my dad in the “in memoriam” section. Here is a photo of Ryan at a young age, just before he began a lucrative career as a TV actor. Rodney Harrington, who was also known as Ryan O’Neal, had a true love for performing on television and would remark something clever while remaining very modest.
