At 12, Faryl Smith Sang Ave Maria and the BGT Judges Could Hardly Believe It

Faryl Smith performing live

Faryl Smith was just 12 when she arrived at Britain’s Got Talent in 2008. For weeks she had practised in her bedroom every night after school, with her mum and dad listening in and telling her what they thought.

Backstage she admitted that her excitement had turned into nerves. Then she walked out, told the judges she would sing “Ave Maria”, and a rich classical voice filled the theatre. It sounded far too mature to belong to a schoolgirl. 🎶

The judges were stunned. One called it one of the most extraordinary things he had ever seen, another said she had goosebumps everywhere, and Faryl was told it was the best audition of the year so far.

Three yeses sent her through, and her proud family celebrated with her backstage. All those nights of practice had turned into one performance nobody in the room would forget. ❤️
